Why do most people call people in the army heroes? When most of them haven't performed a specific heroic act.

DearJulian
Because it sounds good and makes people happy. A fireman who pulls someone out of a burning building is a hero. I don't want to bash on the military, but we use the term hero loosely. We calll people heroes who are in the wrong place at the wrong time, when they didn't do anything heroic, they were just there. Someone survives a tornado and all the sudden they are a hero.

Thankyou! This is exactly what I am trying to say. :)

Your question is one I have asked myself many times! Remember that Jessica Lynch, she was the Army girl who was captured by the Iraqi's and was recovered by Special Ops group. They called her a hero, she didn't do anything... She was a cook in the Army whose convoy got captured after they had a wreck, she never fired a weapon. I never understood it.

Yes, my thoughts are exactly the same on this matter. Maybe if they stormed a building and killed 15 terrorists on their own and saved a family of hostages, then I would call them a hero.
