That's interesting. I sometimes think he is a bit harsh with the dogs, but not very often. Those horrible choker leads he uses must hurt the dogs.
I don't think any of his equipment hurt the dogs. Whatever he would do with them would calm them down. He didn't provoke the dogs to whimpering or acting scared. He would always tell people don't hit the dogs.

I've sometimes seen him be quite forceful when pushing them or pinning them down. I prefer Victoria Stillwell's methods for training dogs.
I don't believe he's really as forceful as you are imagining. He holds the animal firmly to force it to be still for a while, but he doesn't press against it to make it painful
