What is political correctness/incorrectness?

I've heard this term get tossed around in arguments and debates plenty of times and I still have yet to know what it means.I know it has a negative stigma behind it, but I just want to know what the term means, and what an example of it is.

Political correctness is not saying things generally considered offensive to minorities, women, LBTGQ, the disabled, etc.
Political incorrectness is being offensive on purpose.

I do not hold that political correctness is tolerating those who are intolerant, or respecting those who hold beliefs that hurt people.

That's my point of view. I don't know if it's the actual definition of either.

to me it means being naive. To have and accept stuff like a child when your experiences and knowledge are being denied.

All "others" are good etc and always asking for empathy.

To some level it is good but taken to the extreme it is not.

From the left- Political correctness is the careful use of language so as to offend as few as possible. It is conversational etiquette.
From the right- Political correctness is a silly, counterproductive, and sometimes dangerous fear of words.

Basically, people want to be able to be freely offensive (racist, sexist, insensitive to people with disabilities) without being called out or challenged over it. Said challenges are considered being "politically correct".

If you call someone a degrading term, it's politically incorrect. Or if you call a male who transitioned to a female a "he," it's politically incorrect. Or calling people with special needs "retarded."

It is the notion that loosing our freedoms is far less important than running the risk of offending someone.
