Why are dimes smaller than nickels?

In order of sizes it's Quarters, Nickels, Dimes, Pennies... why isn't it Quarters, Dimes, Nickels, Pennies???

It did not used to be - when it was made of silver it was smaller than the 10c coin but people said it was too hard to handle and so they found a cheaper metal and made it bigger!

Dimes used to be made of actual silver, and they never bothered to change the size.
