Looking for advice regarding choice of weapon.

Looking for advice from my friends with prior training and experience in the use of weapons. I am 62 and in less than the best physical condition. For home protection, my wife and I each have S&W 9mm M&P semi-automatic pistols. We also have a 12-guage pump action shotgun.

If “the bubble went up” I want a weapon that will allow me to exercise my Second Amendment rights and responsibilities. I am torn on which choice is better – an AR-15 like weapon in .223/5.56, and AR-15 like weapon in .308/7.62, or a long gun/sniper rifle in .308/7.62.

I have never used an AR type weapon. I am not impressed with .223/5.56 caliber range and stopping power. I shot expert (near perfect score) with M-14 at 300 yards including perfect scores in off-hand, sitting, and prone. I live in a suburban area.

What do you recommend and why?

Before reading all of that I was going to say the 'Pen is mightier than the sword'. If you need all those weapons perhaps you should live in another country.

I infer from your profile that you are European, not American. I understand that my culture as an American may be very different from your own. I intend no offense to you or your beliefs.

I feel very committed to the U.S., our Constitution, and our constitutional, representative republic, especially our Bill of Rights. Time and again throughout history, those who have given up their arms have been killed or enslaved. I will do everything I can to prevent that here in the US.

I am Australian and to be absolutely frank with you there have been some pretty bad gun incidents here, one of the worst as far as mass killings go, and the USA which should not have happened. But I do have a number of weapons, no pistols, and in view of the recent incidents involving Muslim extremists I am feeling a lot safer that I do have them and I would be prepared to use them if needed. My house in the secluded hills is a very nice safe place to retreat to.

Oz - sorry I missed this post from you. Thank you for your response and thank you to Australia for being a friend to the U.S. Sounds like you gave thought to this subject and chose what you think makes good sense.

I live in a suburb of a large city with a high rate of violent crime. The truth is that my wife and I both enjoy target shooting and pistols were more feasible cost wise than were rifles. We delayed buying rifles until we could afford weapons that best met my criteria.
