Why do people send one-word messages to strangers (esp. when they have no interests in common?)

I'm genuinely curious: why do people send one-word messages (generally "hi") to others, especially people they have no interests in common with? Does anyone actually respond to this kind of messages, and if so, what on earth do you say?!?!

I try to ignore them, it's annoying and seems to be an opening to the generic chat that I've just about had enough of.. After ignoring them some start saying "hi" whenever they see you online- you know cause the 4th we might answer instead of block Lol .
