Why do people send one-word messages to strangers (esp. when they have no interests in common?)

I'm genuinely curious: why do people send one-word messages (generally "hi") to others, especially people they have no interests in common with? Does anyone actually respond to this kind of messages, and if so, what on earth do you say?!?!

If it's from a guy - he's probably spamming a hundred other ladies and hoping to get a few replies.

Ladies sometimes message me "hi" and I'll usually reply. I find females that are attracted to me are usually shy and intimidated so I'll take that as a cue that there is a general interest.

That's my theory, that is.

But what do you say in response? And what constitutes a general interest if you have no idea what they are messaging you about?

It really depends - I usually check out her profile and see what we have in common, what she's into, read her stories, and so on (yes, I'm one of those weirdo males that read).

I usually say hi back, introduce myself and ask what motivates her to message me.

Lol I do say "huh?" in response sometime!! :) I HATE it when a guy messages me without even bothering to read my profile (thank you cooldaddy for reading them!!) and just saying "hi" without giving any indication of why you are messaging me makes me think you haven't bothered to read my profile - so why should I have to read yours and be the one who finds something in common to talk about?

That said, I do always try to respond to anyone who makes it clear they have read my profile and have opened the door to a real conversation. I feel like if they've bothered to read my profile it's just the polite thing to do to read theirs as well and respond.
