What do you do when someone gives you a bone-crushing handshake?

I think that sometimes a weak handshake can indicate that someone is timid, lethargic, or lacking in enthusiasm, but it can also be caused by arthritis. So when someone gives me a weak handshake, I give them the benefit of the doubt. But when someone squeezes my hand too hard, or squeezes it in the wrong direction (squeezing my knuckles together instead of squeezing the palm of my hand from top to bottom), that hurts! I wonder what the best way is to let someone know that they're hurting my hand. Just saying, "Ouch!" doesn't seem to get the message across. The person squeezing my hand just keeps on smiling and doesn't seem to notice that they're hurting me. What do you do when someone hurts your hand by squeezing it too hard?

I'm actually one with a 'firm' handshake (possibly from years of playing the piano). Since I'm aware of it, I try to be careful when shaking hands. When I encounter a "squeezer", I squeeze back slightly and they usually stop. But I can't imagine someone ignoring an "ouch !" I'd never want to hurt anyone.

It's good that you know your own strength. Not everyone does.

i hate that, they do that in church sometimes, ive learned to open my hand up while theyre shaking it so they dont crush it

Yeah, during the Sign of Peace, I always wonder who is going to be gentle and who is going to crush my hand. Once I find out that certain people tend to crush my hand, I start just giving them a one-armed hug instead. But at that moment when my hand is being crushed, I'm never quite sure how to respond.

You can tell them, easy on the hand shake if they don't, then you know they've got to be an a****le.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is something that I haven't tried yet that I can do without getting myself into trouble, which might actually be helpful. Let's hope that this helps. :)

Kick them in the fucking nuts. It's the only way these assholes will ever get the message.
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
That would be very tempting, but it could get me into some trouble.

Figure the person is an asshole trying to prove something.

I do say "Ouch!" but not everyone seems to hear me or pay attention. But thanks for the suggestion.

Deal with the pain.
Realize they think they are the shit. Get on the defensive. Refuse to do business with them.
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
That would certainly affect whether or not I would want to do business with someone, since I prefer to work with people who show genuine empathy.

I'm really cautious with people who do that.
I instantly don't trust their judgement. Not because it is flawed, but it will always be skewed in their favor.
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
Yeah, I think that this is often a sign that someone likes to show how powerful they are and try to be the dominant one in the relationship, which is never a good sign.

Pretend it doesn't hurt and hold a nice smile. Squeeze back.

But I need my hands to do my work. There was one time when I thought that someone was about to break my hand. If he had, I wouldn't have been able to do my job anymore.
