How would you program a self-driving car?

This website presents you with several life-and-death decisions that a self-driving car would have to make in the event of brake failure. For example, you would choose between mowing down pedestrians in a crosswalk, killing all of them, or swerving into a wall and killing the car's passengers. Various scenarios are presented, involving more or fewer people, men vs. women, young vs. old, humans vs. animals, athletic vs. overweight people, pedestrians crossing with the "walk" signal vs. crossing with "don't walk," and professions (doctors, criminals, or homeless). It's a more complex version of the Trolley Problem.

It also illuminates inherent biases. I found that I made decisions based on the following.

Since being a passenger in a vehicle is inherently more dangerous than being a pedestrian, I tended to prioritze pedestrians over passengers.

I prioritized people who followed the law (crossing with the "walk" signal) over people who did not follow the law.

I prioritized humans over animals.

I prioritized saving more people over saving fewer.

Age, profession, gender, and physical fitness level were irrelevant.

All else being equal, I favored driving straight ahead over swerving.
