Plato #1 Euthyphro -- translated by G.M.A. Grube
The first in the Complete Works edition which is the best one volume edition in English, we have here Socrates chatting with the title character about the nature of piety and impiety, a guy who's about to prosecute his own dad for killing someone. It's the first in a sort of trilogy during the trial and sentencing of Plato's hero, The Apology being the next one followed by Crito.
I've read the first 2 a number of times, and will do so many more, along with the rest of them in at least 3 translations each. I'd like souped up editions for the best dialogues with more footnotes and longer introductions. Plato is thee quintessential Greek philosopher, with Aristotle coming in a close 2nd. Plato is more open ended, and Aristotle more confined says one of the lecturers i've been listening to, another dumbed down explanatory of their dichotomy is that Plato led to Christianity and Aristotle led to modern science.
So much to get into, to come gradually to better and better understanding.
It was someone not too long ago that said all of philosophy are footnotes to Plato and Aristotle. And yes it's for the most part Western, but the Arabs did a lot in preserving this ancient wisdom, and we owe a debt of gratitude to them for their labor.
In other news, I think my experiment with controlling the amount of posts I post is over, I shall resume posting whenever I darn well please. Thank you for reading, if there's any Plato scholars roaming the pages of SW, be kind and gentle while instructing me on my slow and arduous path, I will never learn if I just get bullied, but it would toughen me up on 2nd thought, so hey, be brutal with the almost kookoo Coco puff Mister Man.
