Did middle class people have smartphones in 2008?

I was using a cheap flip phone in 2008, but I don't really remember how common smart phones were at that time.
I need to know for some accuracy in a story I'm writing. Is it realistic that a teenager from a middle class family in 2008 has a smartphone?

I was using flip phones for a while, but in 2013 I felt like switching to a smartphone, and since my parents had the money for it, I got one that year.

I tried using a smart phone and failed miserably. So I stuck to my flip and it's been pretty well worked out xD
