I have a theory on this one !
Being the owner of an old I-Phone 3. I think that there's not much in the way of app. technology that i'm interested in.
Yet anytime Apple demand an update, i'm convinced they deliberately download something that disables apps i already have in the hope i'll rush out and buy a newer model !
Thus, your idea that phones might be equipped with a self-destruct feature, may not be as daft as you think !
