When human level intelligence creates human level AI, said AI will be able to improve and create new AI's... so the theory goes, the answer is we will know, because it will easily be able to take control from humans.
I'm not certain I agree to all points though; this would assume it's not only human level but "human nature". All our current AI's are designed for just one purpose alone in mind, and while it's likely a human level AI would be more generic in nature, less human-programmed and more self-learning, there's still little reason to assume it wouldn't come with human built-in limits.

I believe it already has as AI can now understand a humans emotional state. Japan has a android that can do that.

@MrBrownstone: I don't think you understand how machines work. Computers are an application of physics, language, and mathematics that serve as a tool. It's a basic input/output sorta thing. There's no black magic involved and machines are not living.

@MrBrownstone: Sure, but you can not. A computer is just a shitload of tiny circuits etched into silicon. A human mind is much more complex, which is why we have not been able to replicate it. And computers are very advanced. Silicon circuits are down to 14nm (about 28 silicon atoms) in the latest Intel chips.
