Reported UFO Sightings, 1906 to 2014

[media=https://youtu.be/iCPsgCHpPYc]
It’s interesting to see how the number of reported sightings has exploded in recent decades. It’s also interesting that reports of UFO sightings are heavily concentrated in only a handful of countries.

The video was created by ESRI – “an international supplier of geographic information system (GIS) software, web GIS, and geodatabase management applications.”

I think it's interesting, too. I've seen many mysterious objects with lights moving around way up in the night sky, myself. Mostly when I first started lying outside on the ground looking up at the night sky as a kid, with a friend. That was in Germany.

🙂

@Rutterman Oh, I doubt if anything I've seen was actually "aliens" visiting, but some weren't easily explainable.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Piper I'm sure you're right about that. UFOs are simply unidentified flying objects. Just because we don't know what these objects are doesn't automatically mean extraterrestrial beings have come for a visit. There are plenty of other explanations that make more sense to my skeptical mind.
Piper · 61-69, F
@Rutterman I'm pretty skeptical too, but not about the possibility that beings from other planets exist and might have visited ours.
I’m not saying they aren’t there….. I just haven’t seen one. I like to keep an open mind on the unexplained. the moment I say they don’t exist, seven or eight of em will show up at the house and kidnap me.

@YourMomsSecretCrush I've never seen one either, but I don't doubt that others have seen objects in the sky that they can't identify. Of course, this doesn't mean they saw alien spacecraft. I think that's pretty unlikely and that there are other explanations for what they witnessed.

@Lilymoon 😅 Beam me up, kitty. 🛸
Looks like the vast majority of UFO sightings happen in the USA. This suggests two major possibilities:
(1) Aliens just love the USA, stick withing our borders
(2) It's an American cultural phenomenon

Occam's razor implies (2) is more likely, but I'm keeping an open mind.

Here's a map of the US with UFO sightings per capita. They are more common in rural states; of course light pollution could influence this. sorry, it's webp format; doesn't seem to work inside an S/W image link.

@ElwoodBlues The reported sightings are heavily concentrated in the US, but I'd add that southern Canada, the UK, and the Netherlands-Belgium area have had quite a few as well, at least according to ESRI.

My mind is open too, but I suspect less exotic and more mundane things (e.g., satellites, test balloons, lenticular clouds, meteors, upper-atmospheric lightning, and Fata Morgana mirages) account for what people typically see when they report UFOs.

Interesting map. Thanks for sharing it.
Most interesting find, Pah 😍…I’ve also noticed from your video that these sightings are mostly along the coast, and close to the busiest international airports.

Are there any details on how these sightings are verified and hence acceptable to ESRI? 🤔
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Vivaci That's a good observation. It makes sense that people near busy international airports might be likely to spot flying objects they can't identify.

No, unfortunately. I can't find this video on ESRI's website or their YouTube channel, so I can't provide any details about it. I found the video while browsing on Reddit and downloaded it from there, which enabled me to post it on my YouTube channel.

The more English speaking people - more sightings?
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@jackjjackson It's odd, isn't it? I think it's coincidental, but...who knows?
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
😳 @Rutterman
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
What do you make of it?
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@jackjjackson In the US, the number of reported sightings pretty much corresponds with the population in a given area. That's not too surprising. More people = more sightings. I'm guessing there was a big increase in reports in recent years due to more satellites and other objects flying through the skies.

Internationally, I'm not sure what's going on. Some countries with large populations have had relatively few reports of UFO sightings. Maybe a lot of people in these places simply don't report UFOs when they see them. It's also possible there are fewer objects flying over these areas.
