Anyone know why my Mac is running hotter than usual??

I just had it professionally cleaned of dust since its an older model a couple months ago. It isn't running any unusual programs but the fan is kicking into hyperdrive after like 5 minutes now and the bottom is hot to the touch. The hot air is coming up through my keyboard too. I am very concerned since this is super unusual for it.

@SooperSarah i dont see it as junk, but uneeded, i have a macbok air, and really like to use it, i would NEVER buy an iPhone though, they are just soo overpriced

@yorkiemanuk when you realize apple is a fashion company and not a tech company it all makes sense. Who else would release a phone that loses its signal if you do something silly like hold it in your hand?
People are catching on It's gotten so bad apple won't even release iphone sales numbers to its investors. What other company would survive if it said to its investors "just take our word for it, we're doing great."

@SW-User I wish it were that simple. It only gets used for like 15 min to an hour at a shot every 6-7 hours or so.

If the vents are kicking out the hot air it probably is an indication that the heatsink is not clogged up But however the thermal grease may have dried up if it wasn't replaced.

Given the system is old then the thermal grease needs to be replaced. Try getting that replaced with Arctic MX4 and see if there's any improvement. When the CPU has a lower heat conductivity with the copper heatsink it will heat up hence increasing the airflow to cool the CPU faster. It's running its defense mechanism.

You need to isolate the problem .. if it's charging and battery or cpu .. there is activity monitor in your tools that you can watch for mysterious activities.. it could be your browser that causes it.

So first charge the battery with machine off. Then start the comp on battery.. then start activity monitor. There is also cpu temperature that you can monitor on toolbar .. then start chrome ..

Do each step very slowly with a gap of 5 minutes to see when exactly it heats up.

Then connect power.

Sometimes Macs over-heat. It has aluminum body for a reason. They dissipate heat better than plastic.

Go to your activity monitor and see what threads (threads are not applications, but a part if it ) is consuming more memory/CPU. Sometimes add-ins to Firefox, or some other background job takes a lot of resources. Kill those threads that you don’t need.

If it still doesn’t work, you may need to consider upgrading the iOS to the laterest version.

norton is one of the worst anti virus you can have, i have a Macbook Air 2015 model and rarely does the fan kick in or get too hot, i would uninstall norton and install AVAST, its free and does a better job

also are you running it on your lap or on a table

@yorkiemanuk Usually a table since I know it is better for air circulation. I will definitely take your advice and switch antivirus programs, thank you. I am getting tired of paying for Norton anyway.

@yorkiemanuk It is a laptop. MacBook Pro 2015 series. I do have Norton installed and it does periodic scans.
