Seriously though, I don't think it's ever been about the science, or scientists, it's about sensational reporting. Scientists, know what they don't know, and the latter is the biggest part of the problem.
One sure sign that the technology issues are getting resolved, is the level of commercial investment in this space, over the past 5 years. If we remain on pace, there will be a net positive, sustainable reaction, in 5-10 years. What's more promising, is a small house size reactor, that can be part of a micro-grid power design, powering something like 25,000 homes each.

@Northwest yeah I read about that :) regularly but still it has been always promising in the next 30 years so far no one has given a specific date or day .... Iter will start by 2025 as it is a program to study nuclear fusion so scientist will devote next decade in studying the obstacles that are responsible for not letting fusion work on its full potential.
But now I believe its high time that we should have alternate to the energy source that we are used to so far. Thermal works on coal which is not suitable for environment in any manner. Then we have nuclear fission power plants which has so many flows like radiation, nuclear wastes(which has a very long life )and limited amount of uranium reserves available on the planet(for next 300 years). Though we have renewable options such as solar,wind and hydro but all have limitations. So the only promising assurance is FUSION.

@scottamadore2 There is an in-between solution, until net positive fusion comes along, and that's the relatively clean generation of fission-reactors. An example would be what Terapower is working on, as well as more advanced solar power: Heliogen.

if there was political will, i imagine they could do it in a decade. Like landing a man on the moon. As it is, i would say 50 years.
