Do you think that the universe is infinite?

Or is it finite.

Without matter there is no relative distance and thus no space. The universe works better when viewed as a mathematical construct as opposed to a physical geometric object. Kind of like being a program in a computer. The program isn't actually anywhere when it is in operation. It is like an abstraction of underlying mathematics. It is a tricky concept. I'd recommend Max Tegmark as an author on the subject of the mathematical model.

@canusernamebemyusername Matter exist within space. Isn't it?

@infiniterealism There is a sub-group of physicists that see space as an emergent property and not fundamental. So really it depends on what camp you're in.

@UndeadPrivateer You mean that space emerge from matter?
@infiniterealism Well space is literally just a way of saying dimension which is the xyz axis plus time. You can say that this particle and this other particle are something distance from each other. But what happen when there is only one particle? Space/universe no longer exists in a mathematical sense outside of it. The entire universe IS the particle then. I'll admit maths is not my strong suit so I have you visualize all this stuff in my head. I think @CharlieZ is the mathematician on here. Maybe he can do better even if he doesn't agree with the concept.

@infiniterealism Yeah, that's the idea. Space is an emergent property that comes out of how matter interacts over time. I don't think I quite agree with it, but it's a possibility. They have ideas on how to test it that may be possible in the very near future, as in within the next couple decades.

@canusernamebemyusername I see what you are saying but I never heard that idea before.
@infiniterealism It took me a few minutes so it didn't come out garbled. Lol

@UndeadPrivateer ok I see what you mean. I guess it's one possibility. I am not sure I agree with that either.
