737 MAX. Why doesn't the flight computer avoid a crash?

The reported cause of recent 737 MAX crashes is because the stall prevention system.
Many believe the automated stall prevention system — the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS — continually pushed the nose of the plane down despite the pilots repeatedly trying to correct the move.

The flight computers already know altitude, distance to ground, engine power state, etc. Why does the computer allow some sub system to fly the plane into the ground?

Ethiopian Airlines said their simulations found pilots had less than 40 seconds to identify and turn off the defective MCAS system before it crashed the plane. So I want to know WTF is the rest of the plane's "fly by wire" computer doing during that 40 seconds?

Even car computers on more expensive cars won't let you back into an object, and many cars automatically apply brakes before the driver can drive forward into an object. So WTF is a new millions of dollars airplane doing with a flight operations computer that allows flying it into the ground, even with a malfunction in the stall avoidance system? Serious bad shit going on in the flight control computer department at Boeing.
