Trump's fault

Airbus came up with a better design for the 737 competitor, the A320 Airbus. The better design used a different, larger engine under the wing. Boeing couldn't do the same thing because the engines would be too low with the lower Boeing wing, so they moved the engine forward and extended it above each wing. This changed the aerodynamics to create an issue at full thrust where the plane would tend to pitch up, and increased the stall risk. To compensate, Boeing developed a workaround--software to automatically lower to nose of the plane if the angle of attack was too high. A combination of faulty software response and inadequate pilot training led to the two crashes as the pilots had to battle the software continually pushing the nose down.

Auto leveller gear kept engaging.. was the official response yes?

How I understand it, it was a software issue with the auto leveler. I think this because bowing busted their asses to get a software update out right after the second one went down.
