Solar flares are created by interlocking magnetic loops on the surface of the sun, over time they can become unstable and violently shred themselves apart, dragging plasma from the sun's surface out with them and in many cases creating what's known as a coronal mass ejection, or CME, which basically throws out a shotgun of plasma into space.
