Nothing 'banged'. Nothing 'exploded'.
All the matter that currently forms our universe was in a singularity, and began to expand very rapidly (and is still expanding).

Within the singularity, anything might have been anywhere, because there was no 'somewhere'. That's because all position is relative (if you describe your position, you have to do so relative to something else).

With expansion, relative positioning became possible, as did change in that relative positioning, which means that spacetime then came into existence.

@newjaninev2 singularity?? what's that? where did that come from?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Gilhooly It was all the matter that currently forms our universe.

Where did it come from? No idea
@Gilhooly A singularity is a term scientist use where the known laws of physics break down. Like in a black hole, also know as a quantum singularity.
The current thinking was that the universe did not arise out of nothing but was something before. You know as opposed to absolute nothing. But then you have to ask where that something came from and it leads to a circle of infinite regression.

@canusernamebemyusername Although quantum mechanics shows us that nothing is ever entirely nothing. 😀
@newjaninev2 True but what if you took away even the laws of physics? I have constantly wondered where the laws even come from, what are they made of. I like Max Tegmark's idea of the universe as a mathematical construct. But where does the math come from? lol
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@canusernamebemyusername Well, the laws of physics began with expansion, of course. Nevertheless, yes, it's astonishing that we have mathematics available to describe the universe.
@newjaninev2 This just leads to infinite regression to me because expansion must follow some form of mathematical rules. And space, that is dimension has to exist in some mathematical way to be acted upon. I really want to know about what I call the deep laws of physics. I will def admit not to knowing them and it just leads to infinite regression in my head. But maybe the multiverse is infinite. That is both exciting and terrifying.
