How can delete iTunes songs ONLY from my computer and keep it in my library?

Help, please!I'm running out of computer disk space and I've relieved that the largest culprit was iTunes. I've googled this many times, but it ties to delete all the music on my iPod as well. What can I do?

Back up the files on a disc..
If you try to upload your music to iTunes it could automatically delete everything that wasn't loaded from iTunes.
My ex lost almost 30 gigabytes of music and videos when she did an iTunes update.. it deleted everything she downloaded from the web that wasn't from Apple.

If the songs are on your computer they should already be in your library even if you usually play them on iTunes. Though when you delete iTunes the songs your purchases through them will disappear.

Can you not just compress your computer file where they are stored? I don't know anything about those iTune things, though.
