How in the world can the supposed scientist know that the Atlantic Ocean circulation is at it's weakest level for the past 1,600 yrs? Alarming Eh!

I'm not an oceanographer, but I can only assume they used geologic evidence of climate conditions in areas that would be affected by the Gulf Stream, and modeled that based on the current climate and strength of the Gulf Stream
