Do you believe that data on the internet is there forever?

Regardless of the actual hard facts of it(which are very complicated and anything but straightforward), what's your personal feelings?

@SStarfish That's a way to put it, haha.
Well it has a potential to be saved out there and by multiple sources too.. But it isn't always..

@SStarfish Computers are not cold storage and mirroring things only extends their lifespan, does not indefinitely maintain them. Any server farm owner will tell you all about the nightmares of hard drive failures and data loss. Then there's the whole issue of data obsolescence and fiscal viability to keep in mind that really throws a wrench into the whole "data is forever" thing, somebody has to pay for those servers holding that data and have a reason to be dedicating that hard drive space to your data rather than something worth more money.

Now, if you were a major celebrity of some kind bound to become a historical figure of note then you may have a genuine case of data on the internet having an indefinite lifespan, as people will continue mirroring it indefinitely and it will always be of some degree of relevance to a sizable population willing to dedicate the resources to it. For the average folk, though, and even minor celebrities once that relevance fades the data just goes the way of the dodo. There are a whole bunch of data archive efforts focused around trying to maintain academic data because of this problem.

Wooo, data logistics.
Yeah

@UndeadPrivateer that's comforting👍
Anyway someday everyone will be forgotten which is rather nice. So no problem haha

@SW-User Hahaha, true facts. We are all but star dust in the galactic medium swirling through the void of space.
