How did they test the danger of space before they found out a spacesuit is necessary?

Did they send animals up?...THATS SOOO CRUEL IF THEY DID!!

NASA contacted the Navy. Submarines also face hostile conditions. Animals weren't put into space.

Besides, we already knew space was cold and a vacuum.
