If good science simplifies WTF is string theory?

I personally have never bothered even trying to understand it. Just seemed like a shit-stack to me.

string theory is an attempt to bridge the gap between particle theory and wave theory. At the fundamental all matter/energy is either a particle or a wave, and these theories basically contradict each other, in some cases the behaviour of, say, a photon appears to be a particle but at other times they have all the properties of a wave. Most physicists subscribe to the concept of duality, which they know is total nonsense but it allows them to ignore the fact that they don't know whether it is a wave or a particle, whilst still making valid observations. String theory attempts to explain that something could have the properties of a particle when seen end on but the properties of a wave when seen side on (like a piece of string).

@Tuscan why not surface theory and go to the next dimension? Light come from a point but the wave is three dimensional and even can be altered/bent by gravity.

Why not indeed. I don't personally subscribe to either string theory or the doctrine of duality, I was merely pointing out that string theory was an attempt to simplify concepts which are extremely hard to contemplate. @Tastyfrzz
