Norwegian Landslide

A landslide occurred on December 30th in the Norwegian town of Ask; northeast of the capital of Oslo.

The ravine created by the landslide was estimated to be approximately 700 feet (213 meters) wide and 2300 feet (701 meters long).

As noted in the video, the area is underlain by something called quick clay. It is a fine-grained sediment and can be firm as long as it is undisturbed. If overloaded or disturbed, however, it flows like a liquid; causing the loose grain structure to collapse.

Norwegian official advised against building in this area. Homes were constructed there despite the warnings.
Shocking and very sad.
When things like this happen, I tend to wonder whether just advising is enough. It seems not worth losing so many lives.
Surely stronger regulations and some kind of legal consequences would be in order.
If it was me, I'd consider a class action (by the relatives of the dead) for criminal negligence against the developers.
The developers should at least lose their licenses with no chance of regaining them.

@hartfire I don’t know what weight, if any, government advisories hold there. One would think regulation (if present) could have prevented/minimized this.
What a shit way to end a shitty year 😡

Those poor people. It’s similar to folks who built homes on the hilly areas in the peninsula here, in spite of being advised not to, who then were affected by huge slides and erosion.
@bijouxbroussard Was wondering if you knew if and/or when Julius‘s castle—the restaurant—will open again? That pic you posted reminded me of that place.
@CereBellum It’s funny, I’d heard around this time last year that it was really going to reopen, the people fighting it had lost. But then Covid happened so I don’t know if it did.
@hartfire It’s very true, people don’t seem to quite believe the warnings and are in love with idea of “the perfect view”. I’ve wondered about areas in Australia and what the homes with ocean views were like. 😃
