A scientist warns

Do not outsource your logic or common sense. You may not be an expert in virology or epidemiology, or any other scientific discipline. But you can spot a blatant contradiction, you can see when things don’t add up, you can reason logically from premises to conclusions.You are perfectly capable of recognizing that even science is subject to extrinsic fashions, and oftentimes “consensus” judgments are swayed by all too human motivations. I passionately love science. I have loved studying it and practicing it from my earliest years.Science is a wondrous enterprise, a very noble and good pursuit. But science will fail us the moment we turn it into an idol. And scientists will fail us the moment we turn them into an oracle.

I am not a scientist but I know very well when scientists start promoting something that will heavily profit one group or some corporations that they are corrupt.
@cherokeepatti Right. Scientists need corporations to fund their research. We can't trust scientists who are being coerced.

@RocktheHouse I found a natural, cheap and quick treatment for psoriasis on the internet. There was a research study done in China, a country with socialized medicine where most of their doctors are herbalists. They also have surgeons who get the patients if the herbalists can’t cure them. Anyway the study involved taking vanilla every day and the cure rate was very high, about 85% effective. They said it didn’t have to be the expensive vanilla because even the synthetic has the key ingredient ,vanillin, in it that was found to be very effective. I bought a bottle of 99 cent vanilla, took a capful every day in a smoothie and drank it each morning. By the third week I noticed the itching was much less intense. By the time a month had passed I had no more flaking, itching etc. and that was about 2 years ago (if I remember correctly) and it hasn’t returned. I had it for over 4 years and flaking and itching was so bad due to rapid skin growth and the top layers drying out that I was shaving the dead skin off to lessen the itching and I had bought about 4 kinds of psoriasis lotions that had only helped about 3 hours and then the itching would return. There was no corporation sponsoring the study, no real profits to be made from a drug either. The drugs for psoriasis from a medical doctor can be very expensive. They even have “biologics” which I don’t trust or use because likely they have cells from aborted babies in it, and the biologics are very expensive.

Aka: you know a pile of BS when you smell it!

Of course. I've always known (as an adult). Exact same with Doctors.

Surely outsourcing logic is allowing yourself to be swayed by posts here as well?

@Ceinwyn I've never seen anyone convinced of anything after reading a post on here. People gather in post in which they already agree on the topic sure, but swayed?
@Ceinwyn Fair point.

@SW-User Very true. More like scoring brownie points with the tribe they belong to.

All is true about science. This planet has been evolving for millions of years. And many educated know-it-alls are trying to stop it from evolving. That's what Climate Change really is.

Good enough post to steal and share elsewhere my friend! Gracias!

The Greek tradition gives us our terminology and philosophy as well the scientific method. It's practiced by individuals, there's always a process of building meaning and understanding that involves theories, observation and practice

@SW-User You mean you don't possess the cognitive ability to interpret information and make a sound judgment based on your own understanding?

@RocktheHouse Is someone trying to say you can't? If you can't judge on your own which 'truth' do you believe? Each side has its advocates and detractors. How can you determine which one is correct?

I posted the version I posted elsewhere.
