I don't think I'd volunteer. From Mars, earth will be a tiny spot of light in the sky. 9 months away, depending on orbit cycles.
Being that far away from home, and anything remotely normal, gives me the creeps.
There are obvious obstacles. That perhaps in time engineering will overcome.
But long before we colonize distant and hostile planets, there will be new and unforgiving lessons to be learned about the brutality of space.
Just as with Gemini 8. Challenger and Columbia; Soyuz 1, Apollo 1, and 13.
