Do you beleive in people going to Mars to live?

I know Musk is trying to make it happen, but do you really think it'll happen?

Do you think it's possible?
If it were cheaper, would you volunteer to live in mars?

I don't understand how that's gonna work.

Gotta ship everything from Earth?
My head is spinning

It's not going to happen any time soon. No one likes to talk about the dirty little secret that will prevent us from getting there. The radiation on the interplanetary trip will kill the crew. There's no way to protect from it. Even on Mars, you'd have to live underground as Mars has a very weak magnetic field and is bathe in radiation.

No one talks about it because there is no solution.

@HoraceGreenley there are solutions.. they are difficult and expensive one why or the other..
want to live on the moon,, DIG IN
same for mars.
we willnot have independant space colonies for a long time
that said the technical hurdles are real but finite.
ask again in 100 years

@Amylynne The earth's magnetic field extends out to the moon. https://www.nasa.gov/analogs/nsrl/why-space-radiation-matters

Short duration trips, like the Apollo program, between the earth and moon are possible because the earth's magnetic field protects that space from radiation. Once on the moon, underground is the only option.

Once you travel past the moon's orbit, however, the earth's magnetic field won't protect you. The estimates I've seen is that for a 14 to 18 month trip to Mars, half the crew would be dead on arrival with the other half dying within 6 to 12 months.

@HoraceGreenley its the weight.. if we can get enopugh Water/ice it can be used as shilding, there are other material that will as well, again its weight. some attempts adt a carry it with us magnetic field are underway.

I think it is just a matter of time.

@Amylynne I agree. I think the answer is some sort of electromagnetic shielding.

@HoraceGreenley What you said is not 100% true.
There are solutions. Its probably going to happen within the next 5 years or so. At least a turn around trip

@REMsleep No solutions that seem viable
