Well you did not specify the situation its happening in...so the long answer
If we're distant because there was a verbal conflict, we're, in 95% of case overthinking what we could have said instead of what we did say.
In other 5% case we actually realised we were in the wrong and we're trying our best to remeber which flowers you like so we can buy those tomorrow on our way home....because we know apologising with an act of affection is much much better idea than saying anything, since it limits our chances of saying something stupid.
If were distant without any specific reason, means we just need a bit of time to relax from all the daily occurrences....which in most situations means we're literally not thinking of anything just having a blank stare at the wall....or if we're thinking of something its mostly random shit like I saw that kid with RC bulldozer, and I really want one as well...or the rock that was next to my.car looked really nice, I.should have picked it up....also this.answeres your question why.we occasionally have random rocks in our cars.
