Probably a tiger salamander. I see them in different parts of the yard occasionally during wet conditions.

@windinhishair I wish we had salamanders!

@JimboSaturn You have them in Ontario. I've seen three different species on my property and I'm sure they are across the border. You need some suitable habitat on your property or nearby though.

@windinhishair Yes my wife who grew up where I live but more in the country has salamanders. I guess my property and area just doesn't have the woodland and leaf litter and proper forest floor for them.

@JimboSaturn You might be surprised. Two years ago I was clearing a small area beneath some fruit trees that I had allowed to get overgrown and found a blue-spotted salamander. I've lived here almost 40 years and that was the first one I have ever seen.

The tiger salamander is endangered in my area. It wandered into my garage last November during a record warm spell, so I physically moved it to a more suitable area in my yard that is not going to be disturbed where it could easily burrow into thick leaf litter and decaying wood for winter. I haven't seen it this year but it probably survived.

@windinhishair I have planted over a hundred trees and bushes and I have an old woodpile I'm leaving for the creatures to live. I also plan on keeping some leaves in some areas. I'm hoping this will encourage wildlife.

@windinhishair That's amazing!

@windinhishair how lovely such a derpy salamander!

@JimboSaturn I'm sure it will. The old woodpile will be especially useful as it decays. The tree and bush cover is helpful habitat as well. Kudos on the trees. I am doing the same here.
