I Lost My Religion

I've always been a really spiritual person. A few years ago I deconverted from my fundamentalist faith that I have had all of my adult life. I left the church because of its stand on LGBT people like me.

Today I went back. I'm not sure what possessed me to go back, but I found a church in town and went and visited. I still don't believe it. I still feel like it's a lot of people believing things that aren't true.

But the worship... I couldn't keep myself from crying. I cried about a half a dozen times during the service. And about a half a dozen times through the rest of my day today. I'm not sure why it affected me so much, but it really did.

If God is real, why are things so screwed up in the world? But if there is no God, how did we all get here? I don't think asking these sorts of existential questions is very valuable. There doesn't seem to be any answer.

So I'm left with... yeah, I don't buy this church stuff. I won't believe what someone tells me to believe about God just because someone tells me. But then why was it so emotional for me today?

I don't know. I just really didn't expect that.

I believe there is a difference between faith and religion. Faith is a personal choice and lives within us. I’m skeptical of religion because men define it, not God. And i’ve seen to much hypocrisy in the name of God.

I feel you may have felt a void being filled. While the words may not have resonated, you felt your faith return. And it felt good. I hope it continues and you feel good about it.

Your experience today touched your soul and you felt the beginning of something new. Congratulations...you have a new path... at least that’s what this sounds like to me. Soft breezes to you Shadowgirl

The world is screwed up because God gave us free will. I was an agnostic bordering on atheist for years. Now I haven't missed a Mass in 8 years. I'm far from perfect and often times downright evil but God makes me want to do better.

I struggle a lot myself. Everyone is different. I have had many arguments with my ex when we were dating, even-though we were of the same religion.Everyone has a different relationship with their faith and what they believe in, you don't have to merge with everyone else to belong.Me and him both had different ideas of what was right or wrong even if we read from the same bible.

It's emotional because I'm assuming that it's been a big part of your life for a while, so of course it will have an impact when it was a way of life for you.

Religion is an attempt to understand all of the above. Unfortunately, some get carried away and insist that it can only be one way. While faith and acceptance may be admirable, it should never advance to the step of intolerance for others who do to share that faith. None of us really speak for God :)

I like this old Iris song ...

@Heartlander I needed to hear this. It literally brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
@Heartlander thanks for sharing. 👍️

@ShadowSister Don’t expect things to happen instantly. It takes time sometimes for answers that you have. You’ll get there if you seek Him with your whole heart. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13. Also I believe what you experienced was the Holy Spirit through you. Your soul knew what was happening. But maybe your physical self didn’t.. just a thought. Have a little faith in the Lord and abide by His word. He has it for a reason
Bless your heart ... may angels care for you ... and may your questions be addressed

well I don't believe things are a screwed up as the media makes them out to be, maybe 5% of what's said actually turns out to be true..I too have moved away from the church as I also don't agree with the paths it has taken, it's certainly not what it was when I was young. what do you think caused you to cry? past memories?

Intolerance and elitism go against Christ's teachings. People who preach hate "in the name of God" have no clue. Even within one religion (Christianity) there are many degrees of liberalism and intolerance... I'm sure you can find a church where you can feel you "fit in"... Like @uncalled4 said, I doubt God really cares about sexuality if it's within a loving relationship... There are other more important things... Mind you, if you check the New Testament, you'll realize the main message is that good intentions count more than rituals and blindly following "the Law"...

God is there but perhaps god wants us to get involved in this world and to enjoy the earth that's why god sent us away from him.
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@TheOrionbeltseeker This is a pleasant thought actually

You can have faith and spirituality without religion. All religion is is a manmade method of controlling people.
I lost my faith as a child as it was beaten into me. I found god in my own way when i was not looking. He works in his own way

You need time to figure out your self.
Whats my take on that? Religion is all about a way of life, either we like it or not. If it insistingly prohibit some thing we like, like in your case homosexuality. We human tend to rebel. I feel like you are every strongly driven by your sexuality and at the same time fear of God, in case its true that there is god or not. Figure your self first, what do you want and your priorities
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Embrace a personal relationship with God, as I do. I am not part of the LGBT community, but I believe that something like gender or sexual preference is only something we deal with here on Earth and not important in the larger scheme of things. But what do I know?
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@ShadowSister So it's a theological issue for you?
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@uncalled4 I guess so, yeah
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@ShadowSister I know some people do struggle philosophically. But God is Love, remember that, and maybe everything else falls into place. :)

You were probably in mourning. ? You may have come to the final realization that that comfortable religion that you were brought up in doesn't work for you any more...?
my mother was supper strict and belted us a lot. She said it was gods work and we had to be made to be better for his sake. I stopped believing for many years

The Holy Spirit is working in you, that's why, and when that happens you can't deny it. You can live like you deny it... but inside you can't. That's why.
I wish I had an answer for you. I am also struggling with serious questions about the church I attend. I will keep you in my thoughts.
