I have always wondered why Catholics don't have a bible study program like we do in Protestant Churches.

This is from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:
Scripture always has played an important role in the prayer life of the Catholic Church and its members. For the ordinary Catholic in earlier centuries, exposure to Scripture was passive. They heard it read aloud or prayed aloud but did not read it themselves. One simple reason: Centuries ago the average person could not read or afford a book. Popular reading and ownership of books began to flourish only after the invention of the printing press.

Once the printing press was invented, the most commonly printed book was the Bible, but this still did not make Bible-reading a Catholic’s common practice. Up until the mid-twentieth Century, the custom of reading the Bible and interpreting it for oneself was a hallmark of the Protestant churches springing up in Europe after the Reformation. Protestants rejected the authority of the Pope and of the Church and showed it by saying people could read and interpret the Bible for themselves. Catholics meanwhile were discouraged from reading Scripture.
...

You would think after the Printing Press was invented, the Catholic Church would be gleaming with joy. They were not happy about the printing press. They wanted to keep the bible in Latin and in the confinement of the church, so no one but clergymen could read it.

Everything goes through the local priest.

But you are correct. Protestants always know what John or Paul or whoever said ....quote page this and that...verse this and that. That always kind of impressed me somehow. Especially Americans seem to know the Bible.

I might be totally wrong here but catholics did not know how to read nor write so had to go to the local church and ask the priest for advice and counsel.

Catholicism is older than protestantism by the way...

@revenant Protestantism is an attempt to recreate the Apostolic church by riffing itself of all the Catholic additions to the faith.

@SandWitch
the catholic church dictated to Scribes (whom were the educated ones), what would be printed in the bible and what would not.
That statement is mostly accurate. True, it was at a Catholic Council, the Council of Hippo (393), when the Catholic Bible was first canonized. However, as early as the 2nd Century, those books were already considered scriptural. The Old Testament was canonized between 200 BC and 200 AD, perhaps the official canonization of the OT took place at the Council of Jamnia. That had nothing to do with the Pagan Roman Catholic Church.

Catholics would argue that the Catholic Church is the only Church that was around, which is laughable. "Ignatius used the word Catholic in his Letter to the Smyrnæans in 110 AD." Yes, Ignatius was referring to the Universal Church - the body of Christ, which all believers are a member of. The Church was not meant to be an Organization under the Dictator Pope.

Prior to 325 AD, there was no 'Universal' Church under the Papacy. Most historians agree. If the Church was already universal under the papacy in Rome, there would have been no need for the Council of Nicea (325) to take place. The Council of Nicea was convened by Constantine to settle the Arian controversy. It was Constantine who wanted a Universal Church and wanted the authority to be vested in Rome.

@Justice4All The problem is we confuse the word catholic which means universal with roman catholic which is a formerly orthodox church based in Rome. It then went its own way with its adoption of mariology and was excommunicated from the other orthodox churches. The protestant church sprang from the catholic/orthodox tradition but wasn't interested in the faults of both the orthodox and the Roman catholic church. Thus it abandoned the icons of the orthodox and the mariology of the roman catholic and attempted, based on scripture, to recreate the early church such as St Paul or St Peter or St John might have led in the first century.

@SandWitch @hippyjoe1955 @Justice4All thanks you all for your comments. My answer just got deleted so starting again.
I presently live near a cathedral. I admit I do like to go there for peace and quiet and yes I light candles.....to Mary,

I think catholicism has always been more in touch with rites. The incense, bells, robes...it invokes humility in you which is not present in protestant churches. The cathedrals are also architecture masterpieces with lots of secrets that people cannot explain to this day. Those were not built by the brutalism movement.
Ley lines also inscribed on the floor. Cathedrals were not built just on a whim somewhere.

What I am trying to say,,,those people were far from being stupid.
Latin was a sacred language just like Sanskit now.

I think people have forgotten lots since....

@revenant I appreciate your feelings toward catholicism. I am not a catholic for good reason. That aside I won't criticize you for your feelings or thoughts. Rather I would encourage you to go deeper. To go beyond the robes and candles and markings on the floor. You have the potential to KNOW the risen SAVIOUR in ways you can not imagine now.

@hippyjoe1955 I have always appreciate your writings.....I am looking for the Truth and I am not sure I will find it in my life time but I love to hear from others and their beliefs. I do believe in God though but there might be many different routes to him,,,,

What I found out is that people of faith are simply a lot more decent folks.....
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@revenant While I agree with you that as Jesus said I have sheep of other folds which I take to mean that not everyone has to believe exactly as I do Jesus also said "I AM the WAY the TRUTH and the LIFE. No one comes to the FATHER but by ME" is a completely understandable and absolutely true statement. However it is all to possible to get lulled to sleep by the robes and candles of your religious experience. Nothing intrinsically wrong with robes and candles but should they become the focus of our faith we have lost Jesus' purpose for us as a light unto the world. Why is the world in such a mess right now? In large part because the Church stopped preaching its exclusive message we call the Gospel.

@SandWitch maybe they knew more...a lot of them had to pass for stupid or they would get killed. The religious wars in france were very bloody and incredibly cruel. So many Huguenots ended in Britain, Australia and elsewhere. Persecution was very real. The priests at the time had to write stuff in secret. Stories, metaphores, find the clue, bit like sherlock holmes.
funny how so many religions have the myths and same universal values..
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@revenant The protestant leaders were mostly former catholic priests who read the Bible for themselves. I have had a lot of interesting chats with catholic priests who have never read the Bible. The church doesn't encourage them to do so. Not sure why.

@hippyjoe1955 I have spent a lot time thinking what does he really mean by fishes, bread...the cross even.....
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@revenant The Cross upon which the law and all its requirements was nailed that our shortcomings never be held against us? The Cross where the all sufficient atoning/redeeming sacrifice was made. The bread He fed the thousands which was His body? The wine in the wash barrels which is His cleansing Blood.

@hippyjoe1955 the world is in such a mess right now because spirituality is denied and everything is sooo materialistic.
find happiness in your new phone, new tv, costco,
Only 5 or 6 years I would have never written that.
We live in a sad world devoid of God.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@revenant Yes you are absolutely correct. Without the Spiritual dimension we are pitiful blobs of biology. No future or real past. Nothing we do or say or think or feel is of any importance if we are simply a bunch of amino acids bumping into each other.
revenant · F
@hippyjoe1955 I think the Cross actually represents the wheel of time.
What is bread in French ? pain..yes....sounds like pine does not it ? pineal gland.....

Might be me who is going bonkers, who knows...
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@revenant I think of the Cross as being His love. It expands infinitely toe the left and the right and infinitely above and below. On that cross the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain.
revenant · F
@hippyjoe1955 thank you we agree.....we are all like basic animal farms without spirituality and belief into a higher existence. Higher purpose in life, meaning of life itself.

Ready to be slaves to other humans who just want to pass as Gods.
revenant · F
@hippyjoe1955 Did Jesus not spent time in India ? to me the cross reminds me of the Hindu Swatiska...not the the nazi one wich goes the other way around..

I think Jesus was an ascended master..
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@revenant There is no reliable information that would indicate Jesus ever left what we might call Israel except when He was a baby and spent time in Egypt to avoid being killed by Herod.
revenant · F
@hippyjoe1955 think of the word liver..in French it is foie very similar to foi which means faith.

Liver..Live...and what does the liver look like ? think about its shape....I think Jewish people will know the answer to this one.

Where did Jesus got the lance ????? in his liver.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@revenant Once again we don't know where the lance pierced His side. If the shroud of Turin is His burial cloth then the spear went into his ribs not his liver.
revenant · F
@hippyjoe1955 that is very possible..who knows...I would believe that. Egypt always detained secrets still unknown to this day.
I think a lot of history and info got deleted on purpose throughout the ages.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@revenant I don't doubt that some information was deleted on purpose. However we have more than enough information remaining ir we are willing to tap into it. I have no need to look to India or Egypt or any other ancient country for wisdom when I worship the Wisdom that created the Universe and everything in it. Some years ago I did a small study on different Genesis accounts from around the world. The most believable one was the Biblical account. It is amazingly accurate in many details that can be shown through science.
