One woman, older than me, said that when she was growing up, part of remembering the sabbath in her strict, religious family was that everyone wore their church clothes all day. She was permitted to go out and play, but woe unto her if she got one of her Sunday frocks even slightly smudged.

Her mother would put her soiled or grass-stained dress in soapy water to soak, to keep a stain from setting. Then she would get a spanking from her mother for getting her dress dirty, given on her bare bottom with her mother's hand or hairbrush.

One woman my age in a chat room said that when she was growing up, and wearing her lacey Sunday dress for church, she felt like "a spanking waiting to happen" due to the expectation that she would be on her ultra-best behavior and not get it the least bit dirty.
