What's the reason religions we put in place?

Were most (perhaps all?) religions designed and put in place to control societies and also for financial gains? Was it all about control and money?

They set many 'rules to follow' in place, expect donation or contributions and in some cases, punishment like hard labour, the use of leather strap or cane was also carried out.
