Which Protestants though?
One can be excommunicated, if at all, only by one's own Church, not by any other. You can't be expelled from an organisation to which you did not belong in the first place!
Prostestantism covers a wide range of denominations, so which denominations hold the power of excommunication? I'm sure neither of the two main Protestant churches, the Church of England and Methodist Church, do not.
Excommunication was invented by the Church of Rome when it was the only church throughout most of Europe for nearly 1500 years; and can apply only to its own followers. The most it can do is bar individuals from its own services.
The Greeks and Russians had, and still have, their Orthodox Churches, but I don't know if they ever used this form of expulsion.

Fortunately, we don't care. Since the mass and the so-called authority of the Pope is meaningless to Protestants, the Roman Catholics can believe and say what they like.
