What is Iftar and Zakat?

I keep getting ads on Facebook that say I should give my Iftar and Zakat. I think it is like tithing but I already made my tithe to The Red Cross the other day.

@jshm2 Thanks man.

@jshm2 The tithes of Christians are based on Jewish scriptures, so related. Some Christian denominations are as strict as some Jewish groups are, others not so much.

Zakat isn’t the same as a general charity donation like giving to the Red Cross. It’s a specific religious obligation in Islam with its own rules about who should give and who should receive.

Iftar is the meal Muslims have at sunset to break their fast during Ramadan. Zakat is a form of charity that Muslims give to help the poor. They are part of Islamic practice.
