My thoughts on religion:

I believe we've reached a social evolution point where religion no longer requires magical this and that. The need to ponder a magical being with a magic wand and some magical place or state of mind is dying in the wake of entirely natural and far superior explanations for afterlife. A fully natural religion will emerge.

That should be the case, but unfortunately a lot of people still need to tell themselves there's a god up there.

@BohemianBabe Good observation, yet polling shows that two thirds of us prefer knowledge over mystery. I wonder if that can be increased to 90%
@SW-User A lot of those people who prefer knowledge will lie to themselves when it suits them. That's pretty much the basis of religion. This is why the higher a society's living standards are, the less religious that society is. People let go of religion when they're doing well.

@BohemianBabe I should point out it depends on your definition of God. We (Zoroastrians) don't believe in a personal, omnipotent, omniscient God. God is rather the force of knowledge and consciousness that connects is all.
@basilfawlty89 That's a common belief in a lot of European Occultism. The idea of a universal consciousness.

@BohemianBabe it's probably due to Proto-Indo-European influence.
