First one must realize what tithing actually meant when given by God to the Hebrews.
10% of any of your earnings which may have been precious metals, precious gems, even livestock and produce.

Tithe was initiated for the entire tribes of Israelite to donate to give to the priest who were the Levites.

Because the Levi's were considered priest they did not receive a portion of land - nor could they work or earn a living Joshua 13: 7-33...... Their job was to maintain the temple and the doings of God with the people Deuteronomy 10........

There was a yearly tithe for the Levites and priests Numbers 18:25-28___ and there was a 3-year tithe to be *given* to not only the Levites but the stranger, the poor, to the widows, to the fatherless, the homeless the hungry those in need Deuteronomy 14:27-29___ 26:12-13 ......... And the seventh year tithe when no farming was done and the land rested.

Israel didn't pay taxes like the other nations around them. There was a volunteer Temple tax ( as termed today) to pay for certain items, which the Israelites called atonement offerings - Exodus 30:11-16..... They paid like a poll tax of sort _ a shekel or so which was a one-time payment. It was during the time of King Solomon when taxes was levied.

But some believe that the tithes was a form of taxes that was paid to the ruling government, therefore given to the temple because the Israelites had no human King God was there overseer until they cried for one and received Saul.

So in this modern world and in some Nations before, it is normal for 10% of one's income to be taken or paid to the ruling government. That 10% given to governments of Nations is equivalent to the 10% tithes given by Israel.

The church has kept itself separate from the governments which in this country directly takes 10% earnings and the church still ask for and in some cases demand 10% of one's income in tithes.

There are a handful of ministers that will tell you that after the death, burial, and Resurrection tithes were not continued by Paul or the disciples.
1 Corinthians 1:16 Paul writes for one to lay aside on the first day of the week whatever they can offer - he did not say 10% of ones income.

So it shouldn't matter if one pays 10% to the church or not but do give according to their hearts.

I give according to my heart and the amount varies.
