Anyone else have a relative suddenly become religious?

Not legitimately, in name only. My mother is going through this, she went hardcore into Christianity, mentally erased her past, and likes to feel superior. Before everyone flames this, I have no problem with Christians, most are decent people. But my mother is no Christian. If anything, this is more like spiritual narcissism. Same as someone that buys a tesla just to say they are environmentally friendly, but still throws garbage onto the highway.

Sure, she cheated, lied, stole, manipulated, and has been gaming the system for years. But I guess that the state reducing welfare/food stamp benefits awakened something inside of her. Or maybe she was hoping that she could rope in a church guy with money. Who knows.

I would point out that people become Christians because they realise they are sinners and need forgiveness not because they are good people. Sounds as if your mum sure needed lotsa forgiveness - but then we all do.

@Mathers Probably, but if I've learned anything about her, she's after the title of "Christian" rather than being one.

Give it time. She’s a learner. All Christians are learners. They are Christians because they are not perfect.@Magnolia21

Lonely elderly people suddenly seem to “find god.”

I think it’s to cope with the idea of things coming to an end.

No, but I have had one suddenly become political. That's even worse these days, I think.

No. My family silently became nonreligious.

Is she getting on in years? She might be doing the christian thing of sinning with great enthusiasm until just before death, then being born again to guarantee a place in heaven?? XD
Magnolia21 · 22-25, F
@walabby Nah, not even 50. Just been a less-than-good person, and call me cynical, but her free ride (pandemic boost to unemployment and food stamps) is ending. That's just how she's always been. Oh, I'm sorry, she's "hustlin"

You sound as if you’re very much enjoying judging her. Is that so? How much do you hate her?@Magnolia21

God knows if she is genuine in her conversion or if she is just launching another scam..

Conversions can be a very quick thing.. I took about 6 months to transition into being a Christian.. I know there are people who attend a church service and become Christians during the service. It's like a switch gets triggered in their minds..

She sounds like some politicians.

Sounds like yer Mother has egoism? Christianity teaches to rid oneself of such a thing.
Magnolia21 · 22-25, F
@Sazzio True, but most religions preach against something their followers like to do.
Sazzio · 36-40, M
@Magnolia21 Thas true!
