I Am Sick of People Arguing About Religion and Politics

I’ve seen a lot of political posts here and on Facebook lately. Most revolve around what people think about the latest crazy/obscene thing Trump has done to provoke Americans and then play the victim when there’s any kind of backlash. First, another reason it’s such a travesty that Trump is president, aside from his bad policies, is that now all the news is about him. It’s not about the everyday struggles that common people like you and I are facing, it’s all about him and his shenanigans. But he is the president, and what he does also has significant consequences for the country, so it’s unavoidable that the news is all going to be about him.

The other thing is, down in the comments section, everyone states what they believe, and it’s all about exactly what you would expect, conservatives like whatever Trump’s doing and believe everything good happens because of him, and progressives are all opposed to it. But nobody ever gets to the root of the disagreements. Nobody ever seems to stop and wonder why conservatives like Trump and progressives don’t. It’s like each side is just using their beliefs and rhetoric to try to beat the other side a few inches back so they can win a few more elections this time, and they don’t seem to consider that even if they do win the political football game today, it’s all going to be rolled back the other direction when the other side gets the ball back tomorrow.

As a progressive myself, I hate Trump’s policies, and it’s clear to me that something needs to change. I’m talking big picture here, not just Democrats need to turn out and vote in 2020, that would be political football again, and we need to get away from that. I recognize too that conservatives felt that their values are deeply violated when Democrats win and control policy, so let’s find out why the two sides believe so strongly on opposite sides of the issues and talk about how to get us all at least closer to being on the same page.

Now that I have thoroughly cleared my throat, from what I’ve read and what makes sense to me, the biggest difference between conservatives and progressives is biological. Conservatives have bigger amygdalae (the part of the brain that detects danger) than progressives do. Consequently, whereas progressives like to seek out thrills and novelties, conservatives are more sensitive to potential danger.

So how can we come to a consensus about which side is right? How dangerous is the world really? What size amygdala is healthiest? And how can we help the side that is less healthy learn to adapt?

Maybe those aren’t the right questions or the right wording, but I think it’s at least a step in the right direction that nobody I know seems to be taking.

I think someone should do look inside your skull, not for the size of the amygdala but whether there is anything else there.

@LamontCranston this is exactly what this author is talking about.
It's about different opinions but it's also about one country. Not two. Its not about "the best rhethoric bully wins"
