I Am Fascinated By Science, Religion, and Philosophy

I am old enough to remember the problems with the influx of migrants from non Anglo Saxon European countries into Australia. The arguments were along the lines of "they are taking our jobs", "they don't integrate", "they are too different from us", "they don't share our values". The first generation children of these groups did get into trouble, did run in gangs and often engaged in violent acts against the the "skips" as white Australians were known. I think it would be fair to say that the majority of those people are now respected and productive members of society.

Following the cessation of the Vietnam war, there was an influx of Vietnamese asylum seekers coming in by boat. Surprisingly, the Government at the time welcomed them with open arms and encouraged all Australians to do the same thing. But, as with the European migrants, they were subject to the same issues. Again, the majority of those asylum seekers are respected members of the community.

We are now going through a similar influx, but this time there seems to be a religious aspect involved as well. I don't believe that Australia is alone in this, as evidenced by news reports.

Why is it that complaints about this latest wave of migration has included a religious component? Is this a fair response?

You mean Islam and Muslims?
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@SW-User Yes. But unfortunately, if someone "looks Muslim", they will be treated as such. I saw an example of that with a person I know who seems to think that all Indians are Muslim.
SW-User
@Bushranger most Indians are Hindus not Muslims but I get you, ignorance is rampant!
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@SW-User Unfortunately, this is so true.

Hindus and Muslims don't get on at all, despite both being religions of peace, that's why Pakistan exists, to keep then apart!
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@SW-User And the person I was referring to had mostly had contact with Pakistanis.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@Bushranger And it's marvelous how religions of peace can cause so much bloodshed.

@Bushranger the only way to overcome it is to ban religious schools, and any promotion of any religion in schools. Politics too. All is needed is a basic objective summary in education. End of.

@SW-User That could get some people all fired up here 😂

The earlier migrants I spoke of were, predominantly Christian, so I can see why there wasn't a religious concern with them, however, the Vietnamese refugees, I believe, weren't. Then again, they were escaping communism.

@Bushranger some folk have trouble accepting the truth!

In the UK it's actually a legal requirement for state ("public") schools to promote christianity by holding a "broadly christian" religrous each day. :(

An older law (1944 Education Act) just said "religious assembly" but in 1988, rather than scrapping it, the law was changed to specify the christian religion. I don't suppose it's all that surprising given that we have a christian religious leader as Head of State and the Church of England has it's own, unelected, representatives in Parliament.

@suzie1960 I know, I had to suffer it.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@suzie1960 That's ridiculous. Schools should be secular, whatever happened to separation of Church and State?
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@Bushranger That separation doesn't exist in the UK. The church is part of our Government.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@suzie1960 Another reason to be grateful for deportation 🤣

The way things are going, though, I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with a similar system. Lots of people I know are scared that we will become an Islamic state.

@suzie1960 I'm inclined to believe being Church of England is in fact the best Agincourt two fingered salute to establidhed religion you can get! But people ignore that! Good old Henry VIII. 🙂
