You are judging a complex man on one snippet of an interview. He wasn't perfect but he deserves to be judged on his whole life rather than one statement.

A racist is a racist. Just because he's idolised, doesn't stop him from being a racist. Your argument seems to be "yes, he was, but he changed his mind.". When did we ever extend such a courtesy to other racists?

Actually that is not my argument at all. You seem to think that one statement defines the person. I take the whole person into account, his life actions. Not just one interview. I happen to know this racist supported financially, timewise and patronage wise charities supporting every race. So, I find it difficult based on one comment in an interview to call him something.
