I've learned that in order to be married even legally you do not have to take on the man's last name at all. The man can even take on the woman's last name.

@butterfly1013 Yes, because you don't legally take it, you just use it as an alias which is not illegal.

Who tells you these things? @KiwiBird

@Muthafukajones Friends that have divorced and legal advice from a family court lawyer.

I am talking about the legal situation in NZ and Australia. The law here is based on British Law. I cannot be a 💯% sure about the US.

@KiwiBird I’m not in the US. Using an alias is completely legal in the commonwealth countries provided you don’t do anything illegal.

A name change document is part and parcel with the marriage certificate in most commonwealth countries as well.

@Muthafukajones Exactly using an alias as long as you are beholden to what you do in that name is legal. Exactly as you said.

I am not aware of anyone using a name change certificate in the marriage documentation. Usually just the marriage certificate is used as evidence and this is signed by the woman in her maiden name.

I have several friends that have divorced and none of them had to do anything in the legal sense to revert back to their maiden name. For example a passport requires a birth certificate not a marriage one.
