I don't understand the point.

To me it's like if I'm solid with someone I don't need the threat of losing half of my finances for leaving them because I'd rather self immolate than leave anyway so...

For decades now I truly have been saying marriage is about control. Both on the government end as well as the marriage end.

I can even go as far as that it promotes a patriarchal society. So it's about societal, governmental and marital control.

And this is all around the world.
The only point is to manage property and inheritance. In the time of hunters and gatherers, relationships only lasted 3-4 years. That was long enough to sufficiently prepare a child for it to be raised further by the community and then people formed different couples for their next child.

But then agriculture was discovered and people started owning property, so there needed to be a way to divide that and transfer ownership fairly upon death. A paper trail that bounded parents and children for life was the solution. Only much later was it romanticized and the ideal of lifelong love was added.
