I Don't Believe Marriage Is Necessary
Society has changed, you can add anyone including the family cat to your will! If bastards can inherit, can marriage be obsolete?

Yes it is a strong binding contract to the government. That contract is more difficult than the contract between the two people.
I'm separated from my husband for the last 6 years. His father just died. If he inherits anything I have zero interest in it. I do want to divorce him and when I get round to doing the paperwork I still won't want anything. I don't think I will bother to divorce him unless I am getting re-married because I hate paperwork. And there's no law saying I have to.
As you say, a will is for inheritance. The government like marriage because it is legally binding to them too. Personally I believe it's about commitment to the other person. The government are going to control us regardless and if you want to make a statement of love and commitment then marriage is the best way - whether it's legally binding or simply a spiritual commitment.

@TotalMiss In american divorce courts it is. It could be different for other countries and never said it did plus if you choose to have a child It is both peoples choice
