She was The First ! - - - - - - - - A Story of Love and Loss

Part 5 of ?

Camp was a whirlwind that year.
Alex and I built a wilderness shelter out of branches and sticks. Mud, dirt, vines, and leaves.
Joe made all kinds of friends, and with Amelia's help, he became a semi-celebrity at the Camp Store.
After all, not everyone could go up with a dollar and come away with two dollars' worth of stuff.

Amy and I continued to be hit or miss, as we stole moments away from everyone when things were slow.
The notoriety of our relationship waned in the second week among the other campers. Some even questioned if we were still together. The rumors put to rest as we accompanied each other to the dance at the end of the week.
But the end of the week was here, and despite the frivolity and seeming endlessness of the minute, all good things shall come to an end.
Just as our second season of camp did.

The second year ended in much the same fashion as it started,
An awkward boy that everyone thought was cool, and a fantastic girl that was cooler than an early winter snow that too few people took notice of.

Holding each other's hands, and each of us just waiting for that perfect moment to kiss.
Each of us waiting and trying our best to find that single perfect moment that never really came.

Those minutes in the woods when a counselor stumbled upon us.
The walks on barren paths in the rain, when half a dozen other campers came running up with all types of grand plans that we just needed to be a part of.
The dance where our friends interrupted us at each near perfect moment for two young people to share the perfect first kiss...

Ah..., young love.
Like two puppies jumping through the tall grass in a frolicking moment of play time.
In love but too immature to understand how love worked.
Too awkward to seize the moment and declare ourselves to each other.
Each of us seeking that perfect pinpoint of time when everything would fall into place and be practically perfect in every way.

And thus, the second week of camp ended for us...

We both would soon be returned to the lands of Letters and Long-Distance Phone Calls.
Our own existences of family and school, friendships and futures...,
But not before our first kiss.
Our first kiss was me kissing her on the cheek after a long heartfelt goodbye hug at the end of our summer.
A hug that left each of us with tiny tears that we tried to hide as we turned and walked away from each other's arms.

Luckily enough, phone rates fell and we were able to hear each other's voices a tad bit more.
But there we were, 2 young people in some semblance of love.

Which is why I pestered my mom and she pestered her mom to let us have a movie date.
Her mom said No. My mom said yes.
She convinced her stepmom at her dad's house to let her go...

For the first time ever, Amy and I would be together outside the confines of Camp Middlesex.
We'd be alone and together.
At the movies...

How excited we both were....
