I'm white and my ex is black. He would do the same. Any time we argued, he usually brought race into it in a negative way. I think racial inequalities have been ingrained in the black culture for so long (understandably), it's just a go-to in their minds any time something is going wrong. I'm not black, so I can't say the definite reason why some would bring race into an argument, but that's my speculation.

How serious is the relationship? Is marriage a possibility?

My partner is a minority from another country and while neither of have brought up race between each other, because it's a non-issue, I do know she's sensitive about it around others. She'll say things sometimes about how someone acted in a racist way towards her that I don't see in any way. So I think there's sensitivity to it that might be more imagined than real at times. But I'm sure that's driven by cases of real racism. That can hit deep and color someone's thinking about "all."

I think it can become an issue though if someone is living in a world where "enemies" are always present. And some lean in to blaming those "enemies" for their own stuff. I'm not sure that's a strong character trait. Irrespective if it's around race, gender or any of the other things that people latch on to. It can be tricky. But it think it will need to be something you need get past.

I personally think that’s become normalized in a lot of relationships like yours, especially when it’s a black man with a white woman. I would bet he likes the contrast of it because it feels exotic, at least a bit. Has that ever come up?

He‘s subconsciously self-conscious about being black. It makes him insecure. That’s why some people try to overcompensate. It’s to conceal their deep-seated insecurities.
