Yes. I was born a blonde and stayed that way until I was about 8. Then my hair gradually darkened to chestnut (like my mother's). Dark brown is a misnomer, really - technically I am a brownette, due to my blonde origins. My hairdresser takes the gray away when I get to see her, and the dark and light shades she mixes results in my natural haircolor.
To answer your question directly - light browns run the gamut from blonde-turned-brown to a light sort of dark honey color. Dark browns (brownettes) can be anything from plain brown to dark brunette - almost black.
